Why do lithium batteries need BMS?
Date:2023-09-10
The main function of this battery management system BMS is to protect lithium batteries and maintain the safety and stability of the battery during charging and discharging. It plays an important role in the performance of the entire battery circuit system.
Most people are confused as to why lithium batteries require a BMS. Next, I will briefly introduce to you why lithium batteries require BMS before they can be used.

First of all, because the material of the lithium battery itself determines that it cannot be overcharged (prone to the risk of explosion), over discharged (prone to cause damage to the cell, leading to cell failure), overcurrent (prone to increase the temperature of the cell, shortening the life of the cell, or leading to the cell exploding due to the internal thermal runaway), short-circuited (prone to increase the temperature of the cell, leading to the internal damage of the cell, thermal runaway, leading to the explosion of the cell), and super - high /low temperature charging and discharging, and the protection board can monitor the battery's over-current, short-circuit, over-temperature, over-voltage and so on. Therefore, Li-ion battery packs are always accompanied by a sophisticated BMS.

Secondly, lithium batteries in the process of use, each time overcharge, overdischarge, short circuit, the battery capacity will be reduced. In serious cases, the battery will be directly scrapped! If there is no lithium battery protection board, directly short-circuiting or overcharging the lithium battery will cause the battery to bulge, and in serious cases, leakage, depressurization, explosion, fire and so on may occur.

In general, BMS acts as a bodyguard to ensure the safety of lithium batteries.

100BALANCE active balancing integrated BMS not only has the basic protection functions of traditional BMS, but also has 1A active balancing, built-in Bluetooth communication module, intelligent compatible with multiple serial connection, built-in parallel current limiting, universal ternary, iron lithium, lithium titanate, etc. mainstream lithium battery types.
